CHARACTER OF THE WEEK: MAFALDA
A very fun way to improve our reading comprehension when we study Spanish and also learn more about Hispanic culture is to read comics. Therefore, today I want to introduce you to a girl who is going to change your life: MAFALDA.
This comic was created by the graphic humorist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known as Quino. The creation of this comic strip arose by chance. Its author had made it for an advertising campaign for household appliances but it never saw the light of day. It was saved for years and years until the editorial secretary of the magazine “Primera Plana” asked Quino for a comic, who handed over the ones he had saved, without imagining the great success that awaited him.
Ready to discover Mafalda?
It is about a girl with great intellectual curiosity who lives with her parents and her little brother, Guille. Together they represent the typical middle class family of Buenos Aires. The most characteristic thing about her is her critical and non-conformist spirit. He spends long hours listening to the radio to stay up to date with current events, reflecting and asking questions about the future of the world, despite his young age.
Peace and equality are its great principles.
Another example of her great ironic personality is seen in the name of her turtle: Bureaucracy, because, she says, of her great slowness.
It is said that they asked the great writer Julio Cortázar what he thought of Mafalda and he responded that the only thing that interested him was what Mafalda thought of him.
Another curious fact is that she is passionate about the Beatles, she is a great fan of this group. And, very importantly, he hates soup and tries to do anything to avoid having to eat it. On this occasion, you can see her using one of her incredible arguments:
